what a shame, every trip to the peninsula included a stop here. dam good chips, and a big fireplace, was the perfect place to go after a surf.

After over seven years of service the CoastView Eaglehawk Neck webcam, hosted by the Officers Mess, broadcast its final images at noon on Sunday, April 13th, 2008. The popular service attracted over 100,000 page-views every year from visitors across the globe. The camera was removed due to the impending demolition of the Officers Mess which will be replaced with a 4 lot subdivision (DA 58/2007 – 4 LOT SUBDIVISION – “OFFICERS MESS” 443 PIRATES BAY DRIVE, EAGLEHAWK NECK).
The CoastView team is looking to replace the now defunct Eaglehawk Neck webcam in an alternate location with improved hardware quality. CoastView is currently exploring opportunities for funding and sponsorship of this new Eaglehawk Neck service. In the interim our Eaglehawk Neck webcam service will remain inactive.

The new 4 lot subdivision will mean changes to public amenities, parking, and access in the Tasman municipality and the Pirates Bay Visitor Services Zone. Both the Tasman council and the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service have confirmed that public access to the beach is a requirement that has been placed on the developer. Additionally, roughly one third of the existing “Officers Mess” parking lot will remain open and be restructured for continued public use.
The toilets that have been provided for visitors at the Officers Mess during open hours, under a formal agreement between the owner and the Crown, will be demolished. The 2007 Tasman National Park Pirates Bay visitor service zone site plan states that a key action is for the Parks and Wildlife Service to work with the Tasman Council on the provision of toilet facilities in the area - specifically known as the Tessellated Pavement – Eaglehawk Neck Precinct.
At this time sources at both the Tasman council and Parks and Wildlife Service confirm that discussions are underway regarding sanitary facilities and that options are being considered.

Agreed Andrew,
A pity that an interesting and unique building is to be replaced with more of the same coastal development. It could have been a really sucessfull business…
Thanks coastview for saving me a shedload of petty and goodluck in finding a new home for the cam!

What an utter shame. monetary development moves forward again. Although I have never utililzed the actual facility, I often used the webcam for water knowledge in reference to fishing. As stated above-what an utter shame!

before you go off at the family for developing the blocks you should get the full picture. They wanted to sell the business as a going concern but could not get a buyer. They approached parks to take it over for as a shop interpretation centre for the peninsula like at Mt field but parks was not interested.Any interested buyer who went to the council was put off by the council saying that the development which is happening at the Lufra would make the business not viable. They did not want to run the shop anymore so demoliton was their only option left. For a state that wants tourism to be a major draw card letting this shop and area become a four block subdivision is pretty sad.

surely the building is heritage listed and can’t be demolished

all of this opinion and anger (anger=energy) would have been much more useful during the planning application process. Under current legislaiton a local government (in this case tasman council) must advertise and consult the public, and this is where public objection could be quite effective if it came in a large enough volume. The apathetic have missed the boat.
I will miss the camera too but we must remember this is a block of land owned privately and the owners are probably looking after their livlihood. Also keep in mind that this is the middle of a town, not a national park or world heritage area.
As for the camera, anybody got any ideas where the thing could go? Anybody got a shack down there, or know somebody who has? Lets put heads together and achieve something other than making futile complaints.

We agree with all those who are going to miss the Officer’s Mess. It was one of the main attractions in the areas and an excellent eating and resting spot. We own 40 Blowhole Rd and have just offered to have the webcam on our verandah which has good views of the bay. We’re still in Alice Springs but could sort it out with our tenants.
