Cabinet is expected soon to announce its final decision on the creation of a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Bruny Bioregion, following an Inquiry by the RPDC which began on June 6 2005.  To mark this 3rd anniversary, Tasmanians are calling for a network of marine reserves to protect this spectacular asset. The RPDC has clearly stated, “The assessment of the final recommended MPAs shows that if any of these areas are not declared then the Strategy’s primary goal to establish a comprehensive and representative system would not be met. If the size or level of protection for any of these recommended areas is reduced, then the primary goal to achieve an adequate system would not be met.”

What: Rally for marine conservation

Where: Town Hall, Hobart

When: World Environment Day, Thursday June 5th 12.30 - 1.30

Speakers: Christian Bell of the Tasmanian Conservation Trust will explain why marine protected areas (MPAs) matter and what benefits they provide. Tom Baxter, Lecturer in Corporate Governance at the University of Tasmania will speak on the positive role governments can and should play in developing marine reserves.  Jon Bryan will show stunning underwater photography of the marine life of Tasmania’s Bruny Bioregion and explain why the south-eastern corner of Tasmania is the “jewel in the crown” of Tasmanias marine environment. Cassy O’Connor (Save Ralphs Bay) will be M.C.

The combined organizations call on Tasmania’s new Premier to ensure that Cabinet respects the RPDC recommendations.

The Rally for Marine Conservation is jointly hosted by Save Ralphs Bay Inc, the Tasmanian Conservation Trust, the Tasmanian Marine Naturalists Association, the Tasmanian National Parks Association, The Wilderness Society, Ocean Planet, Environment Tasmania and the Australian Marine Conservation Society.

Comments from Semaj in Hobart

Good effort guys, looked like a good turnout on the evening news. Hopefully now with a change in premier, Bartlett will tell Llewellyn to pull his head in, and accept that Tasmanian needs a comprehensive, adequate, and representative system of marine protected areas.
