Surf lifesavers from Clifton Beach are joining forces with Tasmania Police to prevent thefts from vehicles in isolated beach car parks.

Over the summer months the use of the southern beaches increases in popularity with surfers, swimmers and families.

Park Smart is a brochure which highlights the need for crime prevention awareness when parking vehicles around beach areas.

In partnership with Surf Lifesaving Tasmania, members from local surf clubs will assist by distributing the brochures to people using car parks around surf beaches in the State’s southeast.

“With this increase in activity, cars are often parked in remote carparks which may be out of sight and some distance from the beach.  This can leave a vehicle more vulnerable to damage or theft by opportunistic thieves,” Acting Inspector Brian Edmonds said.

“By increasing public awareness and encouraging motorists to lock their vehicles, remove valuable property and report any suspicious behaviour that together we can continue to reduce motor vehicle crime and increase a feeling of safety in the community.”

The Park Smart program was launched at the Clifton Beach Surf Life Saving Club yesterday afternoon.

As a local surf life saver and surfer of some 25 years I make this observation and comment. This action by Tas Police and Surf Life Saving Tas is welcome and deserves support, however I believe it should involve a wider cross section of more regular beach goers including surfers such as members of Surfing Australia Tas. and other surfing, diving and bird watching groups if we are to clean out these criminals. The problem is widespread all year round and includes the more remote carparks on South Arm other than those by surf clubs over the summer months.A wider and more proactive net needs to be cast by Tas Police to assit in improving this festering problem.
