A giant killing spree was apparent in the aftermath of the 2008 Rip Curl Search held “Somewhere” in Indonesia, with Bruce Irons winning his first WCT final against Hawaiian countryman Fred Patacchia. Bruce took down Fred in a convincing, down to the wire heat with a final score of 17.66 to Fred’s 11.16.
In an event that saw the top seeds fall early, the men’s WCT top 45 flipped upside down with Kelly going down to giant killing rookie Tiago Pires from Portugal in round 3. Bede Durbidge going down to fellow Australian Kai Otton in round 4. Joel Parkinson went down to Fred Patacchia with a huge 18.40 to Fred’s 19.50 in round 4. Taj Burrow going down to Chris Ward in the quarter finals, and Mick Fanning getting pipped at the finals hooter by Bruce Irons with 10.83 to Bruce’s 10.84 in round 4.
This outcome has left Kelly still in the lead with 5 events left to run in 2008.
In the first round, it was looking like the 2008 season would be all but wrapped up, with Kelly Slater racking up an incredible 19.17 consisting of a 10 and a 9.17 for an incredible display of tube riding, with the second score culminating from a second switchfoot barrel through the end section of the wave.. An incredible event..
Has anyone else been wondering what the deal is with Rip Curl’s insistence on naming the location of this year’s event as “Somewhere” in Indonesia?
Fair go - any surfer with half a brain knows where it was held - one of the most famous (and crowded) lefts in the world. Hardly “The Search”.
Maybe it’s an indication though that their marketing is targeted towards non-surfers - people who wouldn’t recognise the place.
Not taking anything away from the event itself though - sick waves although not as good as the place can get sometimes.

I’m pretty sure it has more to do with the delicate nature of having a contest in Bali. There were concerns for the delicate tourism industry and the possible chance some fanatical lads in Pyjama’s and a love of things that go Boom! might have wanted to spoil the party and really put the location on the Map....
