Lauderdale based photographer Ian Jeanneret has found some gems in his 1980’s archives - shots of the late, great Herman Tyssen.

Ian read CoastView’s September 2007 article on the 20 year anniversary of the passing of one of Tasmania’s most beloved and influential surfers. [ HERMAN TYSSEN - A SUPERB SURFER & CHERISHED FRIEND - 20 YEARS GONE ]

Ian said, “a while ago I recall reading that it was a shame there weren’t any photos of Herman Tyson about - I came across some pics I took of Herman at Wedge one fine day in the early 80’s.”

Thanks to Ian efforts, today and in the early 1980’s, we can enjoy these shots of a Tasmanian surfing legend in his prime.

Herman was a nice bloke, I remember when he and his Wollongong mates arrived at the Beach House in the early ‘70’s. They fitted in well and stayed forever.

I remember Herman being a bloody good surfer, but i cant remember him being a goofy foot.

pstokely,

thanks for the comment.

I assume these photos were scanned from slides . . .and thus could have loaded into the scanner backwards . . . it does appear he’s surfing switch-foot in this session.

Good eye.

Herman once threatened to rip my bloody head off after he dropped in on me (didn’t like being outfoxed, haha). He could surf ok though. He was the man, in his early days, and if he wasn’t around when it was good, then you were left wondering where was better.

Ha ha!  I’m sure the skipper is right and I have scanned some of the slides back to front.  I have such a strong memory of sitting on the beach looking into the right handers that I just assumed I had the slides right way round.  There was a reason I sat on the beach wink

I REMEMBER WATCHING HERMAN SURF WHEN I WAS A GROM
HE WAS A GREAT SURFER AND A GOOD MAN AND I LOVED HIS HOTTED UP WHITE HQ AT THAT TIME MY DREAM CAR.

FONDEST MEMORY WAS ME, HERMAN,CABBAGE,BERNARD B
GETTING VERY DRUNK AND BELTING THE CRAP OUT OF EACH OTHER AT THE END OF THE NIGHT.

Great to see those shots of Herman at Wedge. Such a fantastic surfer and good guy to boot. I still remember his “cutback showers” as you were paddling out and his classic line” you should have been here earlier” said with the big grin under the moustache. I’ve got a great shot of him “on the nose” at Seven Mile in either 1975 or ‘76.
Regards.
