The 2008 Paul Johannesen Trophy went down on the weekend in small fun waves at Roaring Beach, Nubeena. The 2-3 ft offshore waves were enough to get the competitors moving with some high performance surfing being put on show.

Early standouts included Matt Kennedy, Ethan Wilson, Martin Paradisis, and young up and comer Hamish Renwick who really put it to some of the open men surfers during the event.
The Open womens event was also very highly contested. Sam Collins took the title, putting on a show of vertical backhand surfing on the long lefts.Runner up went to ex professional surfer Sunny Richards-Glasser, Alice Hunter came in Third and Anna Seabrook Fourth.

The Open Mens Final was Taken out by Dustin Hollick, Dustin chose to paddle out on the left hand bank,This proving to be the golden move with Dustin picking off two beautiful lefts and going to town on them with his powerful backhand attack. Last years winner Jy Johannesen came in second ahead of Luke Bugg and Luke Johannesen.

Good to see Joey’s comp go mobile, just like he did!  He was everywhere!  Well done Dustbin, good to see you are still schooling the youngens.  Any pics of the comp?  I heard there was some very close up photo action going on in the open womens.... anyone found Jo’s fin?  hahaha.  Nice work Ham, keep on snapping at the heals of the older blokes, wont be long until you are schooling all of us.

luke & jy, you were just kids when i last saw you. your dad was/is a legend. i remember going to roaring 20 years ago, and knowing the surf was on because your dads dual cab was the only car in the carpark. great to see him remembered in this way. i’ve just moved back to tas and i was devastated when i found out he was no longer with us. keep surfing, maybe we could talk in the future. peter thomas
