The Hobart Mercury has more eyewitness accounts:
“We could just hear screaming and we saw the shark. It was huge,” - Maxim Devine, 13
“I’ve lived here for 20 years, I surf here all the time, and I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life,” he said.
“When you go in the water all the time it does occur to you occasionally that there are sharks lurking around but you just can’t let that get to you.
“I don’t know how I’m going to get that image out of my mind.” - Ian Hollingsworth

I was always surprised there were so few sightings in Tas. Guess it will shake life up if you’re a Tassie surfer! I miss Tas, even if the sharks are getting hungrier…
Typical of Tasmania Police! They’ve “started a ground and air search.” My bet is that they’re more likely to find it in the WATER.
I’m guessing with the ground search, maybe they’re looking for a Tassie tiger shark!
Just glad the young girl will be OK.
Yum Yum Yellow - White Pointers like yellow objects.
I have a book on shark encounters in Tasmania called
White Pointer South by Chris Black. I was surprised to see that there was a similar attack at Shelley Point Scammander a while back and from memory I think he was sitting on his board (which was yellow)
If you want to scare yourself take a look at the book.
Happy Surfing!
I have seen a couple big fish, once wast surfing at rsl’s on my own, and my old man was fishing from the rocks and started waving at me, recons he saw a fin, and shadow bigger than our then car (big bad green kingswood station wagon) And another one, a big f-off fin in the channel at e.h.r. Another time i found a bitten in half seal carcass on the beach at s.e cape rivulet and decided not to take the dusk surf despite it being absolute perfection…. Oh then there are the stories a couple of fishermen were telin me when i hitched a ride with em from strahan to hibbs.. didn’t help i was on my own on that trip either
They are out there, in numbers too, we just don’t hear a lot about them because we don’t have the volume of surfers in the water like the other states.
“And another one, a big f-off fin in the channel at e.h.r. ” I would have shat myself haha, theres only one way back to land!
On King island, had someone catch an 8 foot shark about 300m up the beach from where we were surfing. Couldn’t think of a better way to go really, better than feeding worms, now that’s for sure.
I went for a cray dive in Variety Bay Bruny Island a few years ago, suspected something looking at me for a taste. I didnt see it but the next day there was a story in the paper, a 3m white shark was caught in a net about 300 meters from where we were diveing at about the same time we were in the water. It would have been nice for them to let us know at the time.It was the same blokes we had beers with the night before anchored around in Advenyure bay.We had a great couple of days though cleanad up!!!
I was surfing RSL about 8 years ago and had to leave the water when I saw a shark. First it was swimming paralel to the beach out the back and then a couple of minutes later we saw it swimming through the channel towards the beach. My mate thought it was dolphins and started paddling towards it. Then we turned around to see a group of guys on the beach waving us in. Not sure how big it was, but the dorsal and the tip of its tail fin were reasonably far apart. Not sure if it was the same day as you Andrew.
Approximately 2 days prior to this event, I noticed an immense amount of Krill-like creatures washed up onto the Binalong main beach, with many more still swimming in the waters, fellow surfers commented on been bitten by the hundreds. This of course would have led many larger fish, possibly even seals after those fish, to the Bays waters… I have heard talk of a Seal and even a Walrus been washed up in various locations nearby, both shredded by what appeared to be shark attack.
Just something to ponder on, the Krill was a rare happening, perhaps an ignored sign?
Hey JH the time frame is about right… I was surfing right near the rocks at rsl that day and we did wave down everyone we saw as we walked back as it was headed towards sandpits. Also there was a day at clifton when the college/high surf comp was called of due to a 6m piece a flake being spotted cruising out the back… that would have been about 98’ or 99’ i recon. And hows this, my old man tells a story of a 1m high fin he saw in the derwent one night in his kayak…interestingly only bout a week earlier a fella whent missing from near bellerive never to be seen again..
maybe they closer than we think!!
as for the krill on the beach that’s a very interesting observation, should compare outbreaks of that to water temp and water current data
Yea it’s big news! My family in Holland told me it was on the news.. in holland and germany and french etc.!
I’m real sick of checking the surf and seeing that picture of a shark as soon as i log on. Is this a ploy by the captain to get uncrowded waves?
There’s been heaps of bronze whalers and small white sharks attacking schools of salmon in the bay at bridport for the past few days, preety cool to watch, right in hard on the beach too. Happens this time every year. Don’t surf or dive Waterhouse alone is all I can say about near attacks. 2 at the same reef!!!
About 3 weeks ago me and a mate were surfing at Perons.. ran down the beach, waves were perfect so we jumped in, wondering why 3 guys and their GF’s were on the beach sitting with their boards. About 20mins later they came and and kindly told us they had seen a 2-3m shark and got out.
Thanks for the heads up!! Nothing better then guinea piggin’ for the crowd;)
A few days ago me and my mate were trawling of Recherche bay in a little 2m rubber duck, when this big %^%& fin came out of the water about two metres to our left, a big black shadow underneath.. It then went down and came up still following us about 5m directly behind! We made quickly for the shore! Apparently lots of seal carcasses have been washing up with bites out down south lately.. They are out there!
I have just been told that 2 seals were found washed up on the beach before the attack that had been shot by fishermen (which I am told is not uncommon). Also the “biting krill” reported by Dom would be broken up pieces of jellyfish that happens every year. Am still getting spooked by large pieces of seaweed!
