photo: The bastards are at it again . . . .

The following report comes from CoastView reader, Peter:

“On Sunday 20th April at North Goats car park 5 late model cars had their windows smashed and sound gear ripped out. This happened between 2 and 3
PM.

My old bomb was not touched. It seems they didn’t want the hassle of shifting an old cassette player!

Ethan and a number of young blokes had their nice new cars done over.......the mess was appalling!

Perhaps some guys can set a camera up and spring these bastards in the act? Violence is not the way to go.  What we need is some hard evidence.

I reckon there is team working the Arm, perhaps three or four. Two play cockatoo. One on the beach and another at the track entrance with mobile phones, while one does the break and enter.

Get a photo of anyone who looks out of place and give it to the coppers!!”

you are right, violence isn’t the answer but if i catch or see any one breaking into a car on the arm i will not be held responsible for my actions!!!!!!!!

Comments from in Sandford

Trouble is that it is very difficult to catch these criminals in the act.
I know that these days violence is not accepted.
Unfortunately the scum who carry out these crimes are more protected by the law than the law abiding citizens themselves.

its only a goats that i sit in the water hoping some arse isnt breaking into my car. is there some way i can just give these #### my sterio so they dont smash up my automobile. i need my window more than i need a radio (although i would like both). please let me and others surf in peace.

Exactly.... and with the cost of living going thru the roof these days. It will only get worse.
Signed… a victim of crime.

What is it with Goats that they seem to love? This past weekend I left my boot wide open to air out the stench of 3 week old wet towels and came back to find that someone had actually picked my towel up off the roof and threw it in the boot when it started raining. To think it would be surfers doing this sickens me, but the fact they show up when they know there is swell indicates they are, or at least savvy bastards.

According to a friend from back at school who is now a cop that patrols the South Arm beaches, it is a group of juvenilles from the Lauderdale/Rokeby area, that are in and out of the Ashley facility that are commiting the break-ins. The police say they know who the culprits are, but there doesn’t seem to be any drop in the break-ins. This info is about 4 months old, but I have seen a couple of police cars “hiding” in carparks watching for any trouble lately.

Comments from in clifton

A few friends have had their gear stolen from the beach including their clothes, the police did locate the people in the northern suburbs.
It’s not only @ goats, it seems to happen @ north & south cliffy too.

Is Reeso still around? Should ask him to put those scary looking dogs of his in the carpark. Bet his car has never been broken into. It is Reeso who owns the akitas isn’t it?

Two weeks ago i sat await 4 my owner to return from lumpeys..he was obviously getting shacked off his head cause i waited there all dam morning!! Anyways as i sat in the sun a car pulled up swung back out & around, then stopped at carpark entrance.. then as i watched hoping to get some attention from my surfer mates i realized they were the type i dont like or recognize (bogans) & waited in anticipation to see if they had any black dogs with them.. ‘bumma they hav’nt’!! ‘but hmm how suss i thought’.. as i sat there silently watching every move with a steely eyed look as they proceeded past me 1 of which kept walking past and towards the beach while the others smashed windows on 4 cars reaching in and taking what wasn’t theres...’i thought dont even think about doin that to me’..i wanted to get out & chase them off as they ran out but couldn’t & wished that dad would just hurry up and return, which he did 3 hours later..........

unfortuntely this is not the only situation wherin the cops are said to know who the culprits are, but lack enough evidence to convict them. just recently a couple of cars out the back of my work had empty kegs put thru the windows, and still the culprits haven’t been reprimanded.
something needs to happen with these bastards. i agree with pete, get a pic of anyone suss.

My whole point to the matter is.. prevention is way better than cure!! Take your gear to the beach, leave ur car empty & with the window down slightly! or instead of taking ur dog down to beach.. leave him in the car… These invasions on our property, on our turf have gone on for far too long,& it applies to carparks at all surfing venues, not just locally.. 4 the general surfing public to realise that u just can’t leave your gear behind while u go surf.. we should be able to but u just can’t afford too! and i am continuously amazed as i walk past my fellow surfers cars on my way 4 a surf, seeing them packed to the hilt with board covers, bags, ciggies on the dash etc.. it’s pure naivet`e. So i say it again..’ prevention, better than cure’!…

I think we just carnt win.
My incident of crime was at nth cliffy.
Took everything to the beach, left the car tailgate unlocked.
Got changed at the top of the dunes (it was winter).
The thieving dogs walked along the dunes went thru my
backpak and took phone, camera and wallet.
Go figure

Full on, 5 out of 7 cars broken into and they only the easy to remove and use/sell gear ie. wallets/phones etc. luckily the last car (as well as said bomb) was left un-touched.
One lady had been there only 15mins and had her car broken into, we had been there 6 or so hours with our car left un-touched.. so lucky! Obviously they did not want surfboard bags—and all the gear was stolen from the glove box or center console so perhaps it would be best to take everything with you and leave those consoles wide open so the thieves can see you have nothing in there.

Sad times when you can’t surf without worrying about your car getting wrecked.

Hey guys,
just went for a surf this morning down to south goats! There was no waves but there was a burnt out late model holden ute in the carpark…
just one thing u dont wanna see down at your local beach… !!!!!! be careful !!!

Comments from in CLIFFY

yeh it’s so poop. i really haven’t surfed anywhere else in south arm but cliffy in ages cause it’s not worth the trouble of organising a new window. seems o.k at wedge, safety in numbers i guess. i’ve lived here for 14 years and north goats has always been a favourite for the little #######. Ive had my cars broken into twice at north goats and once at north cliffy where the ####### took everything inside my ute and every thing that wasn’t bolted down under the bonnet.

angry I have just read the robbers are at it again having been a keen sufer in the past I live in town now and study at uni but still love to surf. Any way having had stuff stolen from my car at north Cliffy and a break and enter where I live, they stole small things but used my car as a get away car. They found the keys and helped themselves to a joy ride in my BMW smashed it up, over at bogon hill Bridgewater. All this while we were getting some powder on the moutains in NZ. Then to top it off one balmy evening with the back door open some kid walked into the kitchen while I was in the shower and the other half sitting in the loung watching the box. We only found out the next morning by someone dropping off the other halfs wallet minus every thing that could buy stuff. A call to the banks and $2K later they had bought tickets out of tas, booze and other sundries. Also they took my mobile called up every friend they know to man plus a brother whom I managed to get the phone number from the phone bill that arrived two weeks later. I decided I had to take things into my own hands called the first number they had rung it so happend to be his dodgy brother who also partakes in living off the possessions of others.

its all bull@#$%, what do we pay taxes for? where are the cops waiting eagerly for these little @#@#$% like they wait for us by the roadside with radar guns? its only a few surfers you say? surely a coastview poll on how many of us have been done by these guys would reveal plenty of taxpayers money piled up to fund a more sustained effort at smoking these guys out and issuing serious consequences for this totally inappropriate behaviour. These guys must get the message that it will not be tolerated just like in other areas where they feel they wouldn’t commit the crime. They have it all down to a tee now and know nothing is really ever done about it. Its been 10 years since my car was done and i know it was happening before then. This has gone on for way too long! How much longer will offenders such as these continue to rot our sense of trust? When will the people we trust with law enforcement do something effective? What about cameras - we have beach cameras - what about carpark cameras - i’m sure all the money lost over the years by poor suckers would easily pay for a camera at every carpark! Sound crazy? Not as crazy as all the break-ins!

Comments from John F in Cliffy

Good point Luke.
If as suggested, the cops know who it is commiting the break-ins, surely it wouldn’t be too hard for them to have sombody watching the carpark and a pick up car at the end of the road.
Sure it might take a few man-hours, but as Luke says, this has gone on for a fair while.
Chances are even if they catch the perpatrators they will only get a slap on the wrist, seems to be the way… But if car-parks are properly monitored for a while, then i’m sure at some point it will become to much of a hassle and to big a risk for these peolple to break into cars, and they will move on elsewhere.

Every cop ive ever talked to about it have said.. ‘all you surfer blokes are fit and strong.. get together, arrange a roster between you all..wait in the dunes,..catch them out,tie them up.ambush them & if you have to teach them a lesson..act on it and do it!(within reason, ofcourse) they’ll back us up as they’re sick of it too.. have heard everyone saying what they’ll do, lets just do it.. I bet the maroubra beach carpark is left alone!! lets stick together as 1 as well..walk the walk stop talkn the talk,we need to stop being easy targets & come down on them like a tonne of brickx!!! grrrrrrr

Comments from

I,m sure there are some cops who surf.
What a nice way to earn your pay, 1 cop surfs while his/her partner stakes out the car park. Catch waves and bust the bad guys all while being paid.

Comments from

yeah it sounds like “point break”

but if thats what it takes I dont mind my tax dollars going to a covert operation that picks these f%$@*@s up and stops our surfing anxiety.

Comments from andy in Hobart

Don’t want to stereotype anyone but i’ve seen a crew of sketchy looking blokes in a white commodore hanging around north cliffy carpark and rebounds carpark. it was doubly odd that they weren’t surfers.  could be nothing but keep an eye out.

Did you get the number plate?

Losing your surf gear is a real pain. I had my camper van broken into in my parents drive way at Claremont about one month ago, lost wet suits and a heap of gear both mine and my girl friends over 1000 dolars worth. When I started surfing in the early 70’s we left our cars unlocked and camp sites unattended. Please remember most people are still good we just need to remove this minority from society and the rest of us can feel a lot safer. Keep surfing and keep the life style going.

‘SILVER GEMINI ALERT’.....! caught preparing to smash into cars… chased off by two certain locals?? ready to F*?%$# act.grin at a certain local break… rego# has been given to coppers!!

Its not only “bogans” that are thieving on the arm. Went to surf Lumpys on late saterday morning with 3 friends, I placed an item in the tussocks near the rocks watched by 2 bodyboarders near by who were leaving.  While I was paddling out they took said item...we believe they thought I had left my keys/wallet there but they were out of luck but still took it. While it didn’t have much value its more their actions that cheesed me off. Problem for them is that we did recognise them and their car(only 3 cars in carpark and 2 were ours, car identified by 2 in our group being theirs). A visit from the police may eventuate just as matter of principle.
